Alabama Black Colleges and Universities
Alabama's HBC list is very rich with accomplished institutions. From the 1950s and '60's Civil Rights Movement, Alabama has been a great state for students interested in African-American history and culture. Tuskegee University, the famous black college first headed by Booker T. Washington, is one of many historically black colleges in Alabama. Others include Concordia College in Selma, Oakwood College in Huntsville, and Miles College in Birmingham. Bishop St. Community College, yet another Alabama historically black university, lays claim to a convenient location inside the Mobile metropolitan area and has one of the best nursing programs in all the state.
Many renowned and powerful African-Americans got their start in Alabama. Nat King Cole, Carl Lewis, Charles Barkley, Dr. Regina Benjamin, Rosa Parks, and Condoleezza Rice were all born in this great state. The potential for our youth in Alabama is unlimited!
